Aliens exist?!

Big news for Astronomers and SETI enthusiasts yesterday: A new planet that is probably capable of supporting life was discovered. As pointed out in a recent reddit thread, just a few years ago a possible signal was discovered coming from this solar system. Since 1+1=2, this is the closest thing ever to discovering extra-terrestrial intelligence! I’m psyched!

Here are some excerpts and links to the articles:

[In December 2008] Ragbir Bhathal was scanning the night sky for alien activity, just as he does every night. Except on this December eve Ragbir Bhathal found a strong, regular, repeating signal. […] there stands a strong chance that Ragbir found a message sent by some intelligent, alien race.

A new member in a family of planets circling a red dwarf star 20 light-years away has just been found. […] Gliese 581g is the first world discovered beyond Earth that’s the right size and location for life.

Look out Captain Kirk, here we come.

“Using traditional chemical rockets, a trip to Mars – at quickest — lasts 6 months. But a new rocket tested successfully last week could potentially cut down travel time to the Red Planet to just 39 days.”

I highly suggest reading the article on Universe Today, it’s neat stuff!

“John Gordon used a hobby kit to design a computer-controlled camera, then stuck it in a protective box and launched it into space (from Vulcan, Alberta) with a weather balloon. The pictures shot by his DiY satellite are breathtaking.”

You can see the whole photo set on John Gordon’s Facebook page.

There is also a YouTube video of the whole process (it starts off with some slides, but there is video and sound later):
